When a refrigerator has lost its cold anymore, it’s time to see what the issue could be. Often times it is something as basic as a good coil cleaning behind the appliance. However, with new refrigerators, they’re equipped with various sensors too.
Before we look too deep, we monitor the most typical and simple reasons for this issue. Here are some issues that we’ve determined can lead to a refrigerator that won’t cool:
Is the cord plugged in? This will seem like a funny question, but we’ve been hired for appointments that this was the reason for the problem. Somehow, it was not plugged in. it’s possible a child or pet did it, or an electrician doing a project. Whatever the cause might be, make sure it is plugged in.
Look at the thermostat inside. This is a common problem for anyone with children in the house. After all, kids like dials and buttons and so, without knowing they’re doing something wrong, they play with them. So, check that the thermostat setting is not the reason for the warm refrigerator.
Be sure the vents inside of the freezer area are not blocked with food or boxes. This is very common since sometimes bags of frozen veggies get pushed in the back. There could be food in the way back of a freezer that has long been forgotten.
Be sure the condenser cooling fan is clean and clear of all debris. To be sure, unplug the refrigerator and slide it away from the kitchen wall. The fan for many models is just at the bottom or in the back part of the freezer section. Often times, customers do not think about cleaning this section of the refrigerator. But, it’s important to keep it clean. And, it fills up with fuzz and dust quickly, especially with houses that have dogs and cats. So, grab a rag and clean the collected dust out of the refrigerator coils and fan.
This is not suggested for refrigerators that have the back coil system. Once everything is clean, plug it into the wall and notice if the fan moves.
There are a few more reasons for a refrigerator not cooling after these obvious ones to start to take a look at if your freezer is cool but your fridge is not. The evaporator coils have frost on them. This happens if there is a malfunction in the defrost heating system. Or if the automatic defrost experiences an issue. The evaporator fan motor is another reason.
Every fridge has a set of evaporator coils. These coils are what cool and the fan circulates the cold air throughout the appliance. The damper control assembly isn’t working correctly. The temperature control board that carries the electricity to the fan and compressor, this isn’t likely the problem but it’s worth troubleshooting.
And, the thermistor could be defective, which is a small sensor inside the unit that displays the temperature. Having one of our repairmen look at it is the best solution but these are a few of of the most typical problems.
